Abandon Hope, All Ye Who Enter Those Swamps !
How is the sound?
Bastard Lord is a doom band from Buffalo, U.S. They dropped their first, four-track EP on Bandcamp earlier this month. Of course, the songs are rather long because you know, that is how doom bands roll. But what can we expect from this particular band ?
Well, right from the beginning of the first song, “Cimmerian“, the tone is set as it kicks in with some lengthy reverb – that’s when you know this will be heavy and slow as hell. In other words, this will be doom. You are warned. Nothing fancy to be found here. The bass is fuzzy, the guitar, crushing and the guy on the drums makes sure you won’t stop slowly headbanging your dirty stoner-head.
The vocals will remind you of Monolord as it is distant, distorted and ethereal : the perfect cocktail to lead you on a gentle psychedelic trip. If the lyrics are not very easy to understand, you can (almost) be sure that they are pleading for greater forces to come put an end to your miserable life.
The artwork embodies quite well Bastard Lord’s sound. Indeed, with your headphones on, you can easily picture yourself lost in a swamp at midnight; the smell of decay is overwhelming, the moon is full and you hear a group of people chanting somewhere around : they are probably right in the middle of a human sacrifice. There is definitely the same strange, gloomy vibe typical of old horror movies, especially in the track “Summoner” in which you will hear some nasty riffs and a very cool build up.
Nevertheless, everything is not dark in their music. Indeed, Bastard Lord also manages to write some groovy riffs and sweet melodies, but it is just to let you catch a glimpse of the light at the end of the tunnel, only to better destroy the exit and bury you and your hopes alive in the darkness a few seconds after.
Why is this album worth listening?
- If you are looking for some good old gloomy doom, then Bastard Lords may offer you something worth your time.
In what situation you should listen to this album?
- It is perfect to chill with a beer and a blunt after your horror movie night marathon.
- If you have a few Lovecraft’s books you want to read, this EP could be an interesting soundtrack.
Something particular to note?
The band said that they were working on “a lot of new materials” and that some merch was also coming along, so YAY for that! In the meantime, you can go and buy their first EP on their Bandcamp, it is only five bucks.
