Bluesy Rockin' mode !
Moonshine is a young band formed in January of this year in Tampere, Finland. They just released this month their first EP on Bandcamp, and what a good surprise for such a young bunch of dudes 🙂 Blending several music horizons in 3 songs, you’ll hear some blues, some classic rock, some psychedelic rock, even some heavy rock ! It’s a very effective mix I guarantee !
The first track, “Shallow Waters“, begins with a sweet chords progression ala Wishbone Ash (one of the most underrated 70’s band, if you still don’t know them, I urge you to listen to “Argus“, a masterpiece). Then comes the vocals, some tone problems here and there, and way more powerful in the more rocking moments. But I’m sure that with a little more practice Anton’s voice could be even more soulful and bluesy ! The chorus then comes in with a groovy bass line ala John Paul Jones, it’s short but intense. Then Akseli plays us a very well executed guitar solo in a Jimmy Page/Clash style, not too long, not too short, yeah very effective !
With “Tales from The Moon“, Moonshine takes the blues road with a very present “The Doors” spirit. That groovy riff repeated during all the song can only make your head nod from back and forth ! Do you feel it ? Do you feel the Blues going inside you ? Ooooooh yeah baby, it’s right here… Mmmhmmm..! Ok stop, I’ve gone too far. Back to the review. Bluesy keyboards comes in from Taneli, and I can say only one thing, it just rocks, these guys have a very good feeling ! And talking about feeling I think Akseli is truly shinning here ! The guitar solo in the middle of the song is sublime ! So bluesy, and very good technique at the same time. As a guitarist myself who began with blues and classic rock, I can only say “Congrats dude !“.
“Calm Before The Storm” will certainly be the song you’ll like the most, readers of More Fuzz. Indeed, it’s the heavier, the more psychedelic one. And yes it’s my favorite too 😉 The beginning starts right of the bat, with a killer groove, this moment and the whole song reminds me a lot of The Ultra Electric Mega Galactic (amazing supergroup with Ed Mundell from The Atomic Bitchwax and Rick Ferrante of Sasquatch, listen here !). Then the majority of the song is made of a long airy, hazy, mind-liberating section. Very well crafted, that Floydian atmosphere goes deep into your brain, this is time to close eyes guys ! Listen to that sweet and melodic saxophone solo followed by a very calming and enchanting guitar solo… Fuck they’re good ! But remember, it’s the “Calm Before The Storm” ! The beginning riff slowly sneaks in, and BOOM ! It strikes again ! Fuckin’ Rock ‘n’ Roll baby !
You understood Moonshine is for me a very good discovery, a bit different from what we usually review on that blog. But it’s so groovy, so refreshing, reminding me a lot of 70’s bands I used to listen to… Heck ! Moonshine just gave me the desire to go back to some Led Zeppelin, some Deep Purple, some Orang-Utan !
