Let Yourself Be Guided into the Vastness of the Desert...
(see the Ruby The Hatchet review to read this week introduction)
How is the sound ?
Forget what I said in the beginning of the week on the Ruby The Hatchet review. Sorry for them, but Sahara Surfers is my favorite frontedwoman band. Yeah, yeah, my all time favorite, I just forgot it existed and wasn’t thinking about older stuff ! Because yeah, today’s band hasn’t really released something since 2011…. But that doesn’t mean they are dead ! Apparently we’ll have something to eat in 2015 if I understand well what they say on Facebook 😉
So Sahara Surfers chose well their name, it completely goes along with the music : Kyussian desert riffs full of heaviness and awesome fuzz, mixed with mind blowing sweet and trippy parts ala Colour Haze ! A real treat for all the desert fuzzers we are 🙂
Sometimes you even wonder if you already heard that riff before, but you don’t have the time to think about it for too long because Julia’s outstanding vocals come to hypnotise you ! But I really mean hypnotise, I don’t know how, but you’ll just get hooked by her voice. She has a very particular type of voice, not the typical rocky, raspy one a lot of woman have. No it really feels like a female version of John Garcia, maybe with less aggressiveness than THE Stoner Rock Voice, but with that consistent tone with enough subtle variations to keep you under her magic charm !
My favorite frontedwoman band, but also one of my favorite band period.
Why is this band worth listening ?
- One hand they understood how to craft the perfect “Desert Rock” riff, and make it different and as powerful as the previous one in each song,
- And on the other hand, the calmer and more melodic side in all their tunes is so brilliant, with a huge complicity between the 3 dude playing the instruments, particularly between the 2 strings.
- Excellent music progression, and the sublime vocals also helps a lot in that !
In what situation you should listen to this band ?
Smoke one and enjoy the moment. Feel the sand dust rolling on your skin and let Julia’s voice guide you into the vastness that is the desert all around you..!
Something particular to note ?
The only thing I can reproach is there are not enough guitar solos… Too bad 🙁
PS: Please please I want to hear more, Sahara Surfers please tell us when the new album will be out !
