Top 10 Albums of 2018
10 : Electric Octopus – Pipe Dream Train
After a BIG jam ( 3h53min ) in 2017, Electric Octopus is back this year with a shorter album of 50 min and they kept the same jam energy than before. Tough party last night? Don’t worry, gently take a good spot in your couch and put that new release on to let the stress go. Time to chill and relax. Approved by Mr.Evil Eye! If you are an Instagram user, you can also find the guitar player Tyrell Black who regularly posts videos of him playing guitar!
9 : Sons of Kemet – Your Queen is a Reptile
I’d like to add this band on my top album of 2018 even if this is not really usual compared to the other bands you can find around here. I had the chance to see them on stage this summer and I think stoners deserve to put this experimental work created by those four guys in their playlist. Many things are inspiring in music and for me this album is really psychedelic in its way and it can remind me plenty of bands that I love from psychedelic rock / experimental or even stoner.
8 : Kikagaku Moyo – Masana Temples
Not the heaviest band of the year but what a beautiful new album! Kikagaku Moyo succeeded to release another album who proved that sitar is still worth it! I think they have very extended knowledge about the kind of music they are doing. Pieces that can go through time now and then. Special mention for the graphic work done for the cover!
7 : Sleep – The science
Sleep stays in their heavy boots for that new release after many years on… Third Man Records! So Matt pike can have a conversation with Jack white? Well, apparently yes, and even if we are not so surprised that this might not just be for and only for the love of music, here we have a piece of Sleep that we can enjoy with an updated sound and still heavy as hell.
6 : Belzebong – Light the Dankness
One of my fav doom band, and this last album is another round of heavy belzedoom. They were in Bordeaux in November and that was the first time seeing them on stage for me. HEAVY is the word. I won’t tell you that this is original stuff, I won’t either say that this is something new in what we call doom music. I’m just saying that it is good fucking stuff when you want to smash big things very slowwwww, so thanks to Bbelzebong for bringing some new songs this year!
5 : Pcilocibina – Pcilocibina
Three pieces Brazilian band here! My best friend sent me that album and I enjoyed that right away! I don’t know if they are going to be around Europe someday but take a look at this album and write their name just in case! I surely don’t know many South American bands but they got the groove and I’m not easy to impress in this kind of music! I love the fact that the guitar player is not always in the front for solos, they have just very good riffs and ideas! Clearly one of my favorite heavy rock band of the year.
4 : Rotor : Sechs
Rotor was celebrating their 20 years anniversary in Berlin few weeks ago and 2018 was also a year of a new release for them! I loved their album « funf » Tim ( one of the guitar player ) is one of my favorite musician since I discovered Tschaika 21/16 at DesertFest Berlin 2017 and you can feel his influence in this band ( and his fucking guitar sound ). I’m pretty sure that Rotor or even Tschaika 21/16 are underrated or maybe not very well known by enough people so if you haven’t already heard about them, 2018 offered you another album of these angry German that you can’t miss.
3 : PinioL – Bran Coucou
Ok. Be aware of those crazy French, this is not something you wanna try too early in the morning. Here is the Bandcamp description: « PinioL is the union of two inbred quirks PoiL and Ni. A hideous monster who is afraid of nothing. » Afraid of nothing, this is well said ! This is a mix of so many sounds from jazz, rock, math rock and even metal. You have to be very concentrated and marijuana won’t help you with that this time. The band is composed by 7 people, 2 drummers, 2 guitar players, 2 bass players and 1 keyboard player. Bran Coucou is their first album but if you enjoyed it, you’ll be glad to find other bands like this on the French label “Dur et doux!”.
2 : Mythic Sunship – Another Shape of Psychedelic Music
El Paraiso Records is always in with the last album of Mythic Sunship! Causa Sui enlightened my 2017 on this label but this is something very good that we had with « Another Shape of Psychedelic Music ». I listened to their previous album and it was less impressing than this one.
First, I think they really worked on the sound of the album and it’s not as messy as before. I think they released something really important in experimental jazz and psychedelic music landscape. I simply invite you to read more about that with the beautiful words of Mr.Void with his Fuzzy review last October !
1 : SLIFT : La planète inexplorée
Slift is a band from Toulouse, France and this past year they released their first album. I love to listen to their music as much I love to see them on stage ( three times this year <3 ). They are very often on the road with their colleague Guthio who makes wonderful visual effects during their show. « La planète inexplorée » was released on the 28th September after many gigs!
Slift is really a mix of psychedelic rock / Garage / stoner. Metronomic drum / bass and clear melodic guitar that fit so well together. I always have a good feeling inside of me when I’m hearing their music and this is definitely one of my favorite band to see live ( I know I already said that but damn… )
My advice for 2019? You need to see them on stage!
