Sonic Sludge Guitar Devotion
How is the sound ?
This album stuck out to me and right away, I knew The Fabulous Progerians is not your average album and The Progerians are not your average band. Their sound is heavy yet palatable, dark but not too dark, noisy but so clear at the same time; all eleven songs of this album have something to offer and the musicianship behind these instruments (and DAMN, these vocals) is packed with outrageous talent and heavy metal minds.
The sound is unassuming at first. It comes across as very “wall of sound” at first, with really intense vocals, gripping guitars, and a thumping rhythm section, but this sound, while primarily metal, is truly unique. It sounds like conceptually, these guys like High on Fire and Matt Pike’s ability to fuse different heavy genres. The Progerians blend is a different beast from HoF, though. There is a lot of punk, a lot of Melvins-style proto-grunge, a lot of prog, a lot of doom, and a lot of hardcore all working together. No genre owns the others, instead they are melted together into this mass of rage and introspection. This not only shows that these guys can play music well, but it demonstrates that they are well-listened and know these various genres well enough to recognize the nuances within them that pull them all together.
The recording is well-made. Each instrument is incredibly clear in a delicate balance. There is a sense of simplicity behind the recording that allows the guitars to let them speak for themselves, cascading around your head while the bass drives and the drums beat into your chest. The depth to the recordings create layers within the song, with a crisp finish that lets you hear the complexity of these eclectic heavy jams.
The Progerians pay homage to all of the great heavy musicians of the past and present while not ripping them off in the least. They are playing something new, something intense, and something that is a good listen, start to finish. Highly recommended.
Why is this album worth listening ?
- The Progerians blend so much into their eclectic, yet consistent brand of metal that it is difficult to tell exactly what kind of metal they are.
- Very few bands can pull off a tasteful mix of clean and growling vocals.
In what situation you should listen to this album ?
- I’d recommend sitting down and listening to this album with headphones. There is a lot going on behind the simplistic facade.
- Cold, cloudy day.
- Indica.
