February 13th 2023. Long after humans will lead their way into their own self-fulfilled extinction, the sun will engulf the earth and cosmos will terminate its existence, DOOM will continue to reign!

DOOM BIBLE.

Well you did not expect that, am I right? The cheesy and absurd prediction or even the fact that I am writing about a book!

But in our counter-culture it was a matter of time to have a graphic novel to accompany the mythos of this music and capture the feeling of its aura. I am writing about “The Doomster’s Monolithic Pocket Alphabet” with words by Theo Prasidis and illustrations by Maarten Donders out since November ’17 by Image Comics.

This little bible can totally be judged by its cover. You got the full DOOM salute by His Hideousness himself Lord Baphomet, surrounded by the steadfast foundations of this genre: massive amps and frankincense churning out chalky pale yellow putrid-smelling fumes. All of that is painted with the DOOM-est colour of them all: deep purple. Readers, beware, you‘re in for a scare!

Theo and Maartens tried to incorporate DOOM as a notion, as a meaning, as a tradition and most of all as a [counter]-culture (it’s not “lifestyle” at all!). When you read this book you will come in contact with the ancient spirits, the archetypes of DOOM. The bedrock of all is – of course – the Midland Bastards, Black Sabbath. The creators of a lineage that spans from their debut back in the year of DOOM (1970 also the year when Father Jimi Hendrix left this planet), their immediate offsprings (Pentagram, Witchfinder General etc), the glory 80s (The Obsessed, Saint Vitus etc), the bastardization with other genres, and the modern day o’ DOOM where bands enrich their sounds with low & slow thick riffs.

So the un-holy recipe has everything boiling in this upside down skull: Gear, drugs as means for broadening consciousness (either as listener or creator), mythology, folklore, literature, even fashion or the art of cinema! So rich and full, almost like a civilization in our civilization. The DOOM civilization, I like the way it sounds!…

Anyway, where was I? Oh yes! You also got important people who are either icons or serious pillars of our community, religious imagery and of course the lore of females. Either in their own right with an acclaimed position in the lore of DOOM as high priestesses or seen through a prism of their vampiric and lustful nature, such is depicted in vintage horror films or in the scriptures of Father Edgar Alla Poe, oozing fatal beauty. Finally, you also get some science with its cosmic branch thrown in there for the solidification of DOOM in the universe.

It’s plain simple: if you love DOOM either as a sound or a notion just go buy this little firestarter. Brain arousal for your eyes and brain, the only thing that it’s missing is the audio, but trust me it will channel your inner primordial need for some low key sounds. While you are reading it you ‘ll think associatively and go and play it in your stereo.
