Due to lack of time this will only be a short but cute list of my top records from this awesome year of fuzzzzzzzzzz. Maybe this is somehow an enrichment for you. Or not. I don’t know.

11: The Black Angels – Death Song
… then I had a dream that The Black Angels released another album in 2017, I listened to it, favored it and put it on the list. Very confused I awoke from the dream. And I looked up whether the Black Angels released another album in 2017 (their last one came out in 2014) – they did, called Death Song. I listened to it, favored it and now I put it on the list. My brain somehow did this and I am proud of it and my subconsciousnes mind. This psychedelic space rock-piece really has to be on this list. In any case the 11 looks cooler than 10. Themes like society, politics, anxiety and love are discussed.

You spend and spend the money that you print
One day it’ll all be over

I would really recommend you to listen to Death Song right after you woke up. Proved and tested. By the way: the 8th song is called ‘I dreamt’. WTF?
10: The Devil And The Almighty Blues – II
The Devil And The Almighty Blues.. I already digged their first album. So much the better they released another one. It is really smooth and sounds like a recorded master-jam. The album is both calm and strong. My favourite tune is ‘When The Light Dies’. I definitely got to see them live.
9: Spaceslug – Time Travel Dilemma
Best listen to this in a calm mood with your best pair of headphones. Or while you are drawing.. or sleepinig. Finest space rock with sprinkles of doom and progressive expects you. In addition to that the band members are really funny dudes, I got to know them in 2016. I won’t tell you more. Lean back and enjoy!
8: Mother Engine – Hangar
Hangar sounds like the name of a strong Viking with a long beard. Hangarrrrrrrrr. Of course I know it’s a building. Do yourself the favor and google ‘Hangar’ + ‘Viking’ and laugh about what comes out
I saw Mother Engine live performing only this album. It was an intense and nice experience. You can read my review of the gig organized by Behind The Black Door (aka the band Cone) here.
7: Astroboy – Boy / Girl [EPs]
Heheheh as I mentioned Astroboy in 2016 I could list them in every top-of-the-year-thing in the future, what do you think? So what happened this year? The trio released two more EPs Boy and Girl in December and the drummer changed from Martin to Chris. I really like their some kind of fuzzy pop-grunge. Keep on going and release stuff, dudes. Just don’t stop.
6: The Devils – Iron Butt
Watch out, this will kick your ass. Hopefully you got an iron butt. You won’t believe me when I tell you The Devils are a duo. But they are. This totally blew me away when I first listened to it. This record is concentrated, highly toxicated, trashy power. Praise the heavy high-energy rock’n’roll and kick some ass.
5: Mephistofeles – ( ( ( I ‘ M H E R O I N ) ) )
About 45 minutes of best low-tuned psychedelic-doom. It’s so lo-fi, so heavy, so sick. Combined with weird and evil lyrics this record works well for me. The credits for the cover go to the Wizard Of Meth.
4: Kadavar – Rough Times
I was a bit overtaken by this record. A reason could be I was not that happy with Berlin, the record before, so this killer album stroke me down even more. With their debut they were one of the first stoner-rock-bands I ever knew and they were also the very first gig I attended (they played support for Electric Wizard back then ). Listening to Rough Times makes you think twice, whether you live in 2017 or the 70s. It is dreamy, hypnotic, groovy and experimental. The latter especially the dreamy closer ‘À l’ombre du temps’ – I think I really have to do a French university course to learn the language properly so I can understand every word from this song.
3: Electric Wizard – Wizard Bloody Wizard
I did never expect that. Of course I was waiting months for the new album from the wizuuuuuuuuudhs. But I thought it would be another real doom-album. Darker, heavier, more evil with an overdose of ‘fuck the universe’. Well… Nothing of this really happened. They were like: Fuck it, let’s make a bluesy album. At first I was a bit shocked but I got really into it after the first few spins. Not the doom-kings Electric Wizard how I know or experienced them, but it’s good the way it is. Things change and bands develop, too. I’m curious what’s their next album.. what about psychedelic rock or even space rock? We will find out.
2: Queens Of The Stone Age – Villains
I’m so happy Queens Of The Stone Age exists. I was about six years old when I first came in contact with them. Or in general in contact with good, real music at all. Yeah, I was usually listening to stuff like Disney-movie soundtracks and oldschool-casettes lol. My brother was doomed to burn me a CD with this cute Disney-stuff. He did so but there was space for three more songs! So he did what has to be done – he put QOTSA’s ‘Go With The Flow’ on the CD. And since that moment I played this song again and again. I fell apart for this band. [What were the other two songs that affected me deeply? Maybe you’ll find out another time…]
Villains is not one of their strongest records in my opinion. The record is just not as deep as ‘… Like Clockwork’ or a party-anthems-collection like ‘Songs For The Deaf’.
After all it delivers a good balance of rocky party songs like ‘The Way You Used to Do’ and ’The Evil Has Landed’ as well as deep, calm songs like ‘Fortress’ and ‘Villains of Circumstance’. It’s somehow funny how grumpy I am – I mean, that’s my second favorite album of the year
But what’s my favourite, my number one?
…

Luckily I already did a full review on this – totally deserved. Read the full review.
