Musical exploration through jamming out of the desert of Joshua Tree...
Out of Joshua Tree, California comes 3rd Ear Experience, a band lead by Robbi Robb and accompanied by a number of great musicians that slightly changes from album to album.
We’re talking Psychedelic Rock with a sense of exploration and no boundaries.
I’ve always felt like they have been a little unknown despite their splendid musicianship.
But with the release of their 4th album Stones of a Feather last year they seemed to gather more attention than before and I believe with the new album Stoned Gold they will get the recognition that is due that time.
Today we are also honored to host an exclusive full album stream of Stoned Gold 1 week before the release, a huge thank you to 3rd Ear Experience for letting us.
How is the sound ?
From the moment “Stoned Gold” was announced I’ve been waiting to hear it without having any prior expectations of how it will sound, their last album “Stones of a Feather” was mostly on the calmer side so despite having no expectations I was totally surprised how heavy and hard rocking “Stoned Gold” is.
Sure 3rdEE have made songs in the past that are heavy rockers but here the jams are heavier and more intense than ever.
A perfect example is the title track, you got guitar riffs and pounding drums that wouldn’t be out of place on an album by “Earthless”.
And on my personal favorite “I Am Not Robot”, you get a slower but equally heavy sound, the tempo is steady throughout with different kinds of riffs changing all along great drumming.
But as intense as some parts get “Stoned Gold” is also a very diverse album and every track stand out in some way, like on “Iceberg Dream” which begins quite chilled out and keeps building up momentum and then turn into some splendid Space Rock.
And on “No Walls, No Wars” you get tribal drums and chants that invoke a Native American feeling , all this conjuring up a majestic track and together with the lyrics it delivers a great message.
Also worth mentioning is “The Drone”, another favorite track of mine that brings together everything that I think define the sound of 3rd Ear Experience.
It just got a special vibe about it which their album “Incredible Good Fortune” has, it changes tempo like a ride through valleys and mountains and with Native American chants and vocals spread out it brings forth an atmosphere not found everywhere, an atmosphere I would believe the nature of Joshua Tree has contributed to.
Now I advise everyone to give the album a listen! And if you dig it, support this amazing band! 🙂
Why is this album worth listening to ?
- Simply put, you don’t want to miss out on the last amazing record of 2017!
- Through openess for musical exploration 3rd Ear Experience brings together amazing songs, some with a sound unlike most.
In what situation you should listen to this album ?
- I’ve been playing this album pretty much any time of day, be it home or work or outside for a walk and it always hits the right spot.
- When you want some high energy jams that also got some different influences to spice things up.
Something in particular to note ?
Stoned Gold is released on vinyl through Space Rock Productions the 20th of December, available at their bandcamp and Sapphire Records among others.
With the vinyl comes a really nice little bonus, a short book called “The art of the jam band”, there Robbi goes through the concepts of free form jamming and I bet it will be interesting to anyone who dig music based on jamming, both as a listener and as a musician.
The vinyl also got an exclusive song called “Where You Roam“.
