Apocalyptic Doom from Brazil
How often have you craved to satisfy a demanding dark desire, a sound to truly fill that itching hole in your psyche? Imagine the measureless pleasure when you find the right sound to feed on…
The Brazilian trio Absent has a deep understanding of this yearning between a doom-lovers’ ears, as shown by their thematically named debut EP “Towards the Void”. Luan Lima on guitars, Maurício Caio on drums and Thiago Satyr with vocals and bass are all here to alleviate the lack of motherly love in your life.
How is the sound ?
The sound is dark, heavy and safe. Absent’s Bandcamp page describes the genre as “psychedelic funeral musick“.
They play with skill and patience, alternating the tempo in a trustworthy manner. The four songs melt into each other in both sound and lyrics, creating their own 40-minute world, a story of pain and acceptance, misery and enlightenment, of semen and fucking.
Echoing vocals and heavy riffs stretch the musical landscape into an altar – a vantablack cathedral to worship darkness and death in. Moments of relief are precisely timed, yet the more tender psychedelic elements will always gradually grow into crushing waves of honest doom. The lyrics are as infernal as the sound, which occasionally even touches the black metal genre.
Why is this album worth listening ?
- You deserve this. They deserve this.
- Like a good doom/sludge should, Absent brings peace to your mind. On a gloomy day, they let you draw strength and raw power straight from The Void.
In what situation you should listen to this album ?
First choice for an actual or metaphorical Apocalypse. A great album to empty your head.
Not really a suitable background music as it will claim your attention – nevertheless I very much enjoyed listening to it while chopping sweet potatoes for dinner. Felt god damn epic.
Something particular to note?
Reading the lyrics could add another sweet dark layer to your experience. Also, magnificent solos.
