All you need is a bass and drums to rock out in slow motion!
I started my year of 2019 with something slow and melodic. This improvisational instrumental duo caught my ear with their first release I/II/III in last October and second one IV just before the holidays. By now they have released a tenth track X. Their approach is quite “far out” and something I wanted to share with the readers of More Fuzz. So here is the latest of Archdruid from Canterbury, Earth.
How is the sound ?
I guess we all know people who aren’t used to really committing to listening to music. I know I do. So I know people who would say that the music Archdruid makes is boring, but it could not be farther from the truth. If you have found your way to More Fuzz then I am pretty sure you would appreciate this low swinging groove they got going on.
Each of their releases starts out really really slowly and sometimes they even slow down from the original sluggishness. And that works wonderfully to the somber but chill feeling. It never stays that chill all the way through though. You have to have a bit of patience to reap the full experience.
Both musicians do their part so well that there is no feeling that there is something missing. Bass is used to its full potential as it gives the sound weight and thickness and at the same time slides into these higher pitched dreamy melodies. Drums support the bass perfectly and catch your floating mind back to the moment every now and then.
Sometimes the bass sounds like a fuzzed up cello and on the last release X the bass reached this nice level of nastiness toward the end.
Why is this album worth listening ?
- It is a colossal experience if you have the time and commitment to really listen to it.
- That cello sound.
- You should really listen to their whole discography.
In what situation you should listen to this album ?
- Wake up on a Saturday morning, be home alone, get baked, put it on and just chill.
Something particular to note?
They just started out in 2018 and promising more to come so if you like the music go and support them on Bandcamp.
