"Pandemonium" is a Feast of Fuzz, Majesty and Great Melodies!
Black Rainbows, more than twelve years of existence that can be considered as one of the most powerful and committed conductors of the fuzz in Stoner Rock. Six full-length releases, relying on this latest one, “Pandemonium“, and an indisputable reverence to the most prodigious and blazing stoned psychedelic rock.
These Italians carry on their career and present in each new release a bag full of psychedelia, trance and rock’n’roll energy.
Nothing is fairer than highlighting the merits of these elements in the new release of Black Rainbows.
While waiting for the album to drop, you can pre-order it here, and you can enjoy a premiere of this cool lyrics video just below :
How is the sound?
From he first line of “Sunrise” we have a bridge to all the solid and stunning style of the band. Fuzz open the way in a spacey trip to the most hidden places of the universe. Like a shooting star hitting our heads, “Sunrise” vibrate with a delicious bluesy midtempo drive, shaking the structures and showing us a voice shaped like a Katana provided by the noise-master Gabriele Fiori. At the right moment we ge some smooth different changes of pace and a hypnotizing walk across the Black Rainbow-nian style of exciting psych’n’roll.
The buzz of fuzz go a little deeper and Fu Manchu-style in “High to Hell”, the song we’re premiering today. If the guys are “high to hell”, definitely they are hot like hell too. “High to Hell” go noisy and brain-melting with resonating riffs and ethereal vocal style of Fiori. Each verse sounds like a hammer or a punch in the brain, bombing our ears and mind with pure and crude devilish rock’n’roll. Drums are set to kill and to grab you by the neck and make you bang like you have no future. Recommended listening to the maximum volume exploding the amps.
“Grindstone” set the pace in a schizophrenic trip among dark elements, throwing you into a road of chaos and complete sense of loss. The stranger stuff: this makes perfect sense to your listening. Just like always Black Rainbows still know how to keep their accurate aim hitting the deepest way to make your brain cells dance in an active volcano with their brilliant doomy Stoner trips.
At one point “Supernova & Asteroids” sounds like floating between Swedish Roachpowder and Asteroid sonorities with a little dose of radiophonic appeal. Not a long song, more like a climatic mid-piece keeping the motor running and giving us a little time to get some recovery from the previous musical spanking. Needed: “Riding Fast Til The End of Time” comes like a Dodge Challenger injected with rocket fuel crashing on the highway with a Monster Truck. Its an epic collision with a marvellous guitar-ending to close the track with a great dose of finesse and perfection.
“I Just Wanna Fire” follow in the slower step of development, building an intriguing and mesmerizing atmosphere making me think of something like astronauts jamming some psychedelic rock songs with aliens in Alpha Centauri. The less aggressive vocals of Gabriele in this song is a cool thing to point. We have a sweet breath of warm words instead of the powerful heavy fuzzy opera tangled to moderated guitar lines and groovy pace of drum. “I Just…” may not be the heaviest and most destructive sonic blast but survives with honours as a mature and original piece trippy rock. I do not know, maybe it’s one of those things that twelve years of practice, I do not know … (laughs)
Stoner rock hungry beasts “The Abyss” and “13th Step of the Pyramid” close this magnificent work with pounding rhythms and acid light-distortions. Pounding rhythms due to “The Abyss”, acid light-distortions carrying “13th Step…”. “13th Step…” is one of those more moderated movements without a hellish bang but with a great climate and killer guitars.
Well, this is not exactly a great discover, Sherlock: Black Rainbows shoot to kill and are still a mastermind in this art of giving fantastic moments of swirling Rock. Like a heavy acid-beast, the Italian power trio manages their guns to shoot with precision and are a perfect soundtrack to crazy trips across Route 66 or just to chill out and get high with the finest kind of psychedelic rock. Make your call and make it sure: you will be surrounded by this new huge movement of Black Rainbows!
