A Journey Into The Ruins of a Dead World
After dropping one of the best albums of 2016, the Polish from Sunnata are back. Presenting Outlaws, their new 8-tracks album, they are ready to blow our mind once again. Sunnata offers a fresh vision and a unique way to blast loud sound in our ears. More accomplished and experienced from all the tour they did, the band pushes further into their sound and offer us an incredible effort here. Let’s dig into it!
How is the sound ?
Ravishing is the word. You don’t step out this album without being changed. ‘Intro‘ and ‘Lucid Dreams‘ open this journey into the land of the dead. Taking its time and putting us in an introspective mood, Sunnata knows how to mix perfectly their riffs, using percussions and old instruments to build a smokey atmosphere.
With ‘Scars‘ and ‘Outlaws‘, we discover the emptiness of an abandoned world. Raw and rhythmed by a sick beat, blended with some intense riffages, these songs both deliver an intense kick in the head, blasting us away. But that’s the beauty of Sunnata, they know when it’s time to be calmer and offer beautiful contemplative parts. The ‘ritual’ sound wraps all the instruments and puts an interesting feeling to the whole.
‘The Ascender‘, with those insane vocal parts (reminding me a little bit of ‘Zorya‘, a track from their previous album) is the meeting with the king of the outlaws. Epic and loud, surrounded by some chorus from the clouds, this song is a head-crusher. ‘Gordian Knot‘ can describe the final battle for the kingdom of the outlaws. Intense and with no mercy, the riffs and the vocals melt perfectly.
‘Interlude‘ dig us even further, preparing us for the final track: ‘Hollow Kingdom‘. What a beauty. Almost 13 minutes of the finest ritual doom. The bass sound is textured and heavy but not too oppressive. The riffs are fascinating and the mix vocals/chorus is a really good idea, giving a feeling of immensity. Crushing and heart-breaking, it’s the final step of this odyssey. On the top of your giant castle, you see and feel the haze spreading on your lands. You can now rest.
‘Outlands’ is a must-listen for all those who love epic and crushing doom music. The sound is very unique, melting a lot of influences and create a powerful atmosphere. An intense journey they want you to experience.
