Humulus is like a barrel-aged dark dark beer!
This Italian trio has been giving out chill stoner grooves now over ten years. They were one of the first bands I discovered on my own (after recommended Kyuss, Elder, Samsara Blues Experiment, Sleep, Electric Wizard) when I dived into the world of “stoner” and “doom”. I still remember the exact moment I smiled a wide grin when I listened to the first song on their last album “Reverently Heading Into Nowhere” and knew I had stumbled upon something just what I had been looking for. Bass you could float in, vocals like dark beer, trippy solos and drums with a heavy step. Now there is more – The Deep.
How is the sound ?
Intro of the first song sounds a lot like the theme song of The Terminator, but from that emerges a dreamy melody that swims in a river of bass. This Humulus seems even more laid back than I remember. The quality of the vocals, lyrics and the construction of it all is more mature. Like barrel-aged beer.
After the first track, they hit you with a proper banger. “Gone Again” has that gripping “pedal to the metal” attitude and drive. Since 2017 I have been amazed by how well these guys can effortlessly swing back and forth from hot tempo rock to laid back atmosphere and then to crushing doom metal like they do in the next song Hajra.
“Lunar Queen” is a beautiful song and the guys have understood that it does not need much added to it. And it is a fitting resting place after visiting “Devil’s Peak” and before the finale of the album.
“Sanctuary III – The Deep” is powerful with its riffs and vocals and then suddenly it’s incredibly beautiful with the guitar melody that echoes in the universe built by drums and bass.
Why is this album worth listening ?
- I am having a very hard time naming bands in the For Fans Of section. Humulus has a sound that is very much of their own.
- You can understand the lyrics very well.
In what situation should you listen to this album?
- I would love to see them live one day.
- Until then you need big speakers, some dark beer, something to smoke and a free night.
Something particular to note?
They have released a video for the song Gone Again. See it on Youtube.
