For fans of all kind of Fuzz - but still a creation of ingenuity!
Dead Now consists of three men: Bobby Theberge (Day Old Man), Derek Schulz (Day Old Man) and Andrew Elstner (Tilts, Riddle of Steel and Torche). This band is something entirely new to all the people who are familiar with the earlier works of this trio. However, Tilts or Riddle of Steel might be closest to Dead Now if we speak of sound, song length and heaviness.
How is the sound ?
Opening track “Brunette” reminded me of Mastodon with its clean and powerful vocals over majestic guitar at first listen. Every fan of fuzz may recognize nods here and there to different influences the trio surely has. For example, the third track “Bird Leaf” reminds me a bit of Threshold – the debut album of The Age of Truth from last year. The trio has created an experience for fans of all kinds of different branches of rock and after a few plays this album stands alone in my mind thanks to the versatility they show track by track.
Overall what describes this album is spectacular vocals over wide-ranged soundscape of the latest rock and roll. Something that we all are excited by, appreciate and look for. Earlier experience of all the members is well shown here as all the songs are skillfully composed and each instrument has its own way to impress the listener. The devil hides in the details!
As my own personal taste tilts toward heavier and slower tunes and riffs then I like most the last two songs “Powershapes” and especially “Motorekt“. But the whole album is a fresh approach on fuzzy rock and when you may be a bit stuck in your own ways and favorite sounds then this album could clear your head.
Why is this album worth listening ?
- It is a mix of the latest and best sounds of rock.
- Vocals!
In what situation you should listen to this album ?
- You have some friends over that are sick and tired of you always playing some slow and heavy (oh so heavy) stoner doom? Put this on as it might be on that fine line that is not yet too much for them.
- Or when you want to showcase someone what rock sounds like in 2018.
Something particular to note?
This debut album was released under Brutal Panda Records and is available on vinyl!
Album art designed by Orion Landau (Red Fang, YOB).
