The Cosmic Eggplant Landed On Earth With Deafening Sound!
A few months ago, I interviewed Labros from 1000mods and one of the album he listened back then was Half Gramme Of Soma’s second effort, so I thought you couldn’t go wrong with this one! And of course it’s an heavy and thick album that I thoroughly enjoyed.
How is the sound ?
The straight up stoner elements (not so european stoner but american in the likes of Kyuss etc) blend with the heavy parts of grunge scene along with the essence of spacey heavy psychedelia give this album an excellent feeling while listening to it!
It features excellent guitar riffs, stellar solos by the two guitar players. The groovy sound is also provided by steady drumming and basslines that working under the radar, courtesy of the amazing rhythm section. And don’t forget the harsh but addictive vocals by Motor with memorable refrains!
You can detect the aggressive attitudes in the likes of a punk sound (check Mega Rollo Booster) or midtempo rhythms and extended solos in “Jerk”. The sound even flirts with doom and maybe sludge-ish (check the slow burner “Drowned”) soundscapes.
The in-your-face feeling, the cohesive instrumentation throughout and take-no-prisoners vision pledge for your auditory entertainment.
There is no way that if you like heavy rock, classic stoner rock, heavy psych, a bit grunge you won’t adore the second album by the guys from Piraeus, Greece.
Why is this album worth listening ?
- It is Groovy
- It is Black
- It is Heavy
In what situation you should listen to this album ?
Under the summer skies, eating mushrooms…or eggplants!
Something particular to note ?
Since their debut back in 2013, the line-up of the band went through some changes. Mr. Motor is in front of the mic like he used to do in one of the oldest Greek stoner/heavy rock bands (Vibratore Bizzaro), Mak on bass comes from Sadhus, Mr. Choko besides being responsible for the artwork through Fuzz Ink., he is also guitarist in Last Rizla as well, and ToPill the drummer used to be in the Greek desert rockers Pools Of Mercury. So as you can see the Greek heavy rock scene is showing its solidarity with the large collectives like Sadhus (The Smoking Community) and its members playing in many other projects. Another familiar face is John by 1000mods playing the solo in “Doofie“. The sample at the very beginning comes from the creators of South Park and their experiences tripping on acid! Recorded in Wreck It Sound Studios (where 1000mods recorded Repeated Exposure To…) in Corinth, Greece, it was produced by the band and George Leodis (1000mods, Last Rizla, Lucky Funeral, Godsleep, Sadhus The Smoking Community), who also helmed the engineering and mixing duties, while mastering was by Brad Boatwright at Audiosiege (SUNN O))), Pentagram, Subrosa, Mutoid Man, Zakk Sabbath, etc). The album is out by Fuzz ink. Records. The band is the opening act for Samsara Blues Experiment‘s show in Greece at May 27 (more info here.)
