Perfect Doomy-Psych Album for a Thursday !
Kong by Hound is the perfect album for a Thursday. It beautifully articulates that restless despondency of Thursdays – the exhaustion from earlier in the week, the anticipation of the weekend, and the burnout of the bowl that you smoked before work this morning, because fuck it, it’s a Thursday.
How is the sound ?
“Green Thing” is a killer instrumental that welcomes you to the world of Hound and settles you into the groove nicely. When the vocals come in on “Sleeping Hound”, it blows your mind and you are in for the long haul. “Black Spell” is a killer halfway point, epitomizing the vibe and song structure that Hound is trying to create on Kong. The back half of the album does not ease up in the least; it keeps going strong and keeps you wanting more. “Witch Mount” is a groovy, introspective song that transitions beautifully into the finale, “Orpheus”, which brings the album to a fitting end.
Finding a favorite track from this album is tough for two reasons: (1) because this album flows seamlessly in between songs – an album with such consistency from track to track should be listened to in its entirety; and (2) every song on this album fucking rips.
Why is this album worth listening ?
- The vocals are a unique mix of stoner and black metal in the best way possible.
- This album can be put on as background music while drinking with friends or can be in the front seat on a cross-country drive.
In what situation you should listen to this album ?
- On a hungover Thursday at work.
- Drinking cold beer on a Saturday afternoon with 80s horror movies on mute.
