Driving Thru The Deserts of the Moon...
How is the sound ?
4 Ciénegas (4 swamps in spanish) is a “supergroup” from the Mexican underground scene, that plays instrumental Psychedelic/Stoner Rock. Its members come from 3 of the most consistent bands of the last years: Los Dealers (call it quits at the end of 2014), Bar de Monjas and Vinnum Sabbathi.
As soon as you’re playing this album you will be riding a roller-coaster. The first track “Hiena”, a slow one full of Heavy-Psych elements, will take you to your sofa to enjoy a glass of rum and a good cigar. With the second one, “Damselfly“, you will be banging your head like a tasmanian devil… every tune will walk you through different dimensions of yourself. And that, my friends, is the mood of this fantastic album: the rotation between Psych/Stoner slow pieces and some powerful and fuzzy Desert Rock.
Why is this album worth listening ?
- Because it’s a fine example of the growth and creativity of the Mexican underground heavy scene.
- If you are a lover of the fuzz, distorted bass and thunderous drums, this album is for you.
In what situation you should listen to this album ?
As I said before, this album covers different moods. It’s perfect for the weekend while you’re relaxing in your living room, but also has a lot of fuzz and heavy riffs that suits great for a headbanging session. It’s your call!
Something particular to note ?
If you like what you’re reading and you happen to be in Mexico City this August 13th (tomorrow !), you should take the last chance to see them in action, since the band has announced they are calling it a day for good.
By the way, if you like 4 Ciénagas, you should check the Vinnum Sabbathi/Bar de Monjas Fuzzonaut Split, previously reviewed on this site.
