Take a Trip into the High Lands...
What ? Austria again ? After The Heavy Minds and Savanah recently, here come Sahara Surfers and their brand new album “High Lands“. If you remember well I already talked about them in my Frontwoman Bands Week, and I told you it was one of my favorite band of all time. So of course when the band reached me with this new album, I was really excited to hear it 🙂
Now let’s deep dive in it and see if Sahara Surfers delivered another superb Stoner Rock album (hint : they did but I’m a bit disappointed on some points…) :
How is the sound ?
As a long-time fan of Sahara Surfers my expectations were quite high for this new album. And like I said, they meet them, but not really entirely. Let me explain it simply : I prefer the heaviness and the production of the previous albums, to me “High Lands” feels simpler in its execution, and less “massive” in terms of sound.
But don’t be fooled, it’s still a great album, just not my favorite of them, and some of you may completely think differently. So now let’s stop the negative words and highlight what makes it an album you really should have in your music collection 😉
First off, one thing that hasn’t changed, are those sublime vocals by the enchanting Julia. I’m still in love with her, and she bewitched me once again…
Fortunately, you’ll find again those calm & clean melodies, and suddenly cranking the fuzz into heavier riffs and pounding drums, like we were used to with Sahara Surfers. This is for example the case with “Charma“, my favorite track of this album.
Indeed, Sahara Surfers didn’t lose its very own atmosphere, mixing Alt. Rock simplicity, Desert Rock heaviness and hypnotizing repetitive parts, fans of Kyuss and/or Colour Hazesque sounds will love them 😀
